Abstract
The method involves directing two He-Ne or semiconductor laser beams (3,11) at separate spots (4,12) on the surface (2) which are imaged by a lens (5) on a row of charge-coupled photodetector elements (6). The line of centres (19) of these intersects the plane (20) of the lens at a point (21) on the prolongation (18) of the line joining the spots. A separate section of the detector array is assigned to each spot and the beams are spaced so that the images (4',12') of the spots do not stray from the assigned sections. The effective area of the array may be rectangular with its longer side at right angles to the row. USE/ADVANTAGE - For production technology. Distances can be measured simultaneously with single position-sensitive detector.
