Transparent insulation, such as aerogel and honeycomb structures, can be integrated into window systems to reduce energy losses and improve the spatial distribution of the incoming daylight. The influence of such windows on daylighting and energy use in a commercial building is explored, along with the adequacy of existing modelling tools. Electric lighting savings as high as 70% in daylit offices can be achieved, although more sophisticated simulation tools are needed to handle these optically complex materials.
