Towards Authoring of Mobile Agents

An End-User Interaction and Programming Approach
Abstract
Mobile Agents are increasingly gaining attention in the mobile setting as a suitable mechanism to access information and to perform operations asynchronously and remotely. The end-user of a mobile device (PDA) can parametrize such an agent through available graphic dialog principles of form-fill-in. This article will focus on a more advanced authoring concept - a first approach - , which assists the end-user to not only configure but to visually program a mobile agent based application. This involves a rule-editing scheme, suitable for small handheld devices, to define the behavior of a mobile agent. The scheme is based on the availability of domain specific ontologies, on speech-acts and on ACL. This enables the graphic interactive creation of arbitrary agents for ad-hoc end-user centered tasks, like e.g. for electronic commerce. A reference exapmple - advanced meeting scheduling incorporating a hotel reservation - is sketched in the remainder of the article to illustrate the novel co ncept.
