Abstract
The application of high temperature ceramics requires a proper knowledge of material behaviour. To study damage mechanisms, a special laser based testing method was developed. Thermal shock and thermal cycling experiments on silicon nitride were performed, whereby the maximum temperatures were low enough that only elastic material behaviour must be taken into account. Using a theoretical model, lifetime predictions can be derived from the experimental results. First investigations were also undertaken on fracture processes caused by high temperature creep
