Titel
Stained glass windows. Restoration problems and search for possible solutions
Abstract
Medieval glass is sensitive to corrosion, due to the attack of humidity and air pollutants on the potassium-rich glasses. In order to preserve stained glass windows in their original surrounding, careful maintenance and conservation is necessary. At the Fraunhofer-Institute for Silicate Research (ISC-B) in Germany model glasses, even more sensitive to corrosion than medieval glasses, were used for different purposes: for the evaluation of cleaning techniques, to investigate protective glazings and to compare the efficiency of conservation materials (including new materials developed at the ISC-B). Within an interdiciplinary team the scientists from the ISC- B are working with restorers and art-historians to find new ways for the long-term protection of stained glass windows as an important part of our cultural heritage.
