Adverse effects on zinc on the immune system
Abstract
Literature was reviewed to document the adverse effects of zinc on the immune response of experimental animals and man. In animals, zinc deficiency affected several metalloenzymes and the activity of the thymus. There is evidence that zinc alters humoral- and cell-mediated immunity, NK-cell activity, immunopathological parameters and host resistance in both experimental animals and humans. In man, an immunotoxic effect of exposure to airborne zinc is suggested, but this requires confirmation due to lack of information on various important exposure parameters.
