Experimental strength verification on components having a safety function, such as motor vehicle axle suspensions, is essential. The verification takes place in test facilities which enable the forces and combinations acting on the suspension to be simulated realistically on a multi-axial basis. The resulting, time-varying, multi-axial stress states are measured, analyzed and assessed. The article describes the multi-axial loading of an automobile hub carrier in a region susceptible to fatigue fracture using a four-channel axle test-rig, together with the accompanying measurements acquired with strain-gage rosettes and the DMCplus Multi-Channel Digital Measuring System. The measuring system, 100 percent controllable by computer, synchronously combines the strains measured simultaneously in a number of channels ready for dynamic rosette evaluation in the on-line PC. Apart from the measured strains, the time curves for the principal stresses and their angle of orientation can be traced o n the computer monitor.
