Abstract
A new model is proposed which explains the residual stress relief by shock waves. It is based on the superposition of residual and transient shock waves. Relief occurs, when the sum of them is locally exceeding the dynamic yield strength of the material. Experimental evidence for this model is given. The method is open for practical application.
