The combined operation of various types of components demands comprehensive technical knowledge and experience to eliminate malfunctions. This cannot be mastered by an individual employee. A quick and efficient cause diagnosis can only be guaranteed through support by a knowledge-based diagnosis system. The paper outlines the concept of report-based knowledge management based on problems associated with fault diagnosis of technical systems. The methods used for knowledge acquisition, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of the selected forms of representation, are described. A practical example presents the application areas of the system and explains user benefits.
