Quantification of hyperplastic areas in hamster lungs after chronic inhalation of different cadmium compounds

Abstract
In long-term inhalation studies with Syrian golden hamsters the effects of cadmium oxide, cadmium sulfide, cadmium chloride and cadmium sulfate were studied by histopathological and morphometric methods. No tumor development but a marked alveolar bronchiolization composed of bronchiolar epithelium was observed. From its histopathologic appearance this type of lesion was qualitatively comparable in all hamsters. Morphometric evaluation of the proliferative areas within the lungs of the treated animals showed significant differences in the extent of the lesion in dependence on the concentration and the cadmium compound administered. The most severe changes were observed after inhalation of cadmium oxide and cadmium sulfide, whereas the application of soluble cadmium compounds caused only minimal changes in female Syrian golden hamsters.
