Exhaust gas aftertreatment on a lean combustion spark ignition engine by dielectric barrier discharges
Abstract
Dielectric barrier dischargrs offer the advantage to excite molecules to reaction processes nearly independent of the temperature in an O2-containing exhaust gas of gasoline or diesel engines. With the aim of a flexible coaxial reactor and a compact and efficient generator the influence of geometric and electric parameters on the oxidation and reduction of exhaust gas components were determined. Geometric parameters studied were gap width and contour of the reactor. Electric parameters were: voltage curve, voltage height, frequency and electric power. Using the advantage of low temperature reactions it was possible to reduce the HC-emission of a gasoline engine by about 35 per cent within an electric power range of 1000 W. This is a high potential for the oxidation of HC emissions in the cold start and lower part load. A further application for the barrier discharge lies in the field of diesel engines. Therefore the reactive species created by the barrier discharge can be used for an o xidation of the particulate matter accumulated in the particulate filter (filter regeneration).
