Title

Partitioning of phenol and nitrophenols in gas and liquid phase of clouds

Title Supplement
A contribution to subproject GCE
Abstract
Simultaneously collected cloud aqueous and gas phase samples of the Great Dun Fell experiment were analysed for phenol and several nitrophenols. Phenol, 2-nitrophenol, 2,4-dinitrophenol, 4-nitrophenol and dinitro-ortho-cresol were identified and quantified in the samples of five cloud events. The experimental partitioning coefficients alpha were compared with calculated partitioning coefficients derived from published Henry constants. The results show that the experimental partitioning coefficients of phenol and 2-nitrophenol agree with calculated values. The less volatile nitrophenols show strong deviations from the calculated alpha values which is due to the fact that they are to some extent particle bound. The aqueous phase was collected with a high volume flow active cloud water collector. The gas phase was collected with an improved scrubber system using the impactor as inlet.
