Surface treatments improve the structural fatigue strength of metallic components. The degree of improvement depends on the method and its parameters as well as on the magnitude, the number and the sequence of loadings. Particularly inductive hardening and case hardening are suitable to improve structural fatigue strength. Also cold rolling is suitable. Nitriding improves the structural fatigue strength only insignificant.
