Multiobjective technology information and consulting system for alternative sewage plants (TECIS)
Abstract
For the 10 to 15 per cent of the households in Western Germany and the more than 50 percent of the households in the Eastern Germany not connected to the sewage system, there is the need for a new, decentralized approach to waste water treatment. Various technologies exist for biological effluent treatment, and today even mechanical systems are increasingly relying on some degree of biological treatment. In this context, alternative sewage purification systems using vegetation together with some mechanical elements are worth of special consideration. These considerations include first the natural purification effectivity and the buffer capacity of the three main components: plants, micro-organisms and gravel filters. Additionally, we analyze the influence of climate, the composition and amount of the waste water. A further important aspect is the economical effect. That means, we have to estimate the costs, the construction and purification time and the consumption of energy and area. All the different technologies, including the main parameters have to be stored in a database. If we have defined and filled the database and the stored technologies have been valued and classified, then we can already start to use the TECIS system for advice. In order to get the optimal water purification technology or a combination of different technologies we have to specify the local situation. That means we have to characterize the special ecological (vegetation, terrain, composition of waste water), climatic (temperature, rain, sunshine,..), economical (money, time, area,..) and legal framework, the amount of waste water and the necessary purification rate. After the specification of the local situation the TECIS system calculates the best solution for the specific problem by multicriterial optimization. We developed the optimization model and implemented the involved optimization tools. In the talk we will describe the model and the tools in detail.
