Given the current state of information technology, production automation is still in its infancy. Developments range from high-performance components (machinees, control systems, robots, sensors) to linked processes and complete systems (flexible production systems, computer integration) for material and information flow. The present conditions and limits of automation can be widened through the use of modern sensor systems to open up new application potential, as the example of the industrial robot shows. The aim is to minimise the performance cost-time-profile through increased productivity, flexibility and process reliability.
