In order to realize the idea of a non-dedicated flexible assembly, an exemplary experimental set-up was produced: the cell structure MAX (Modular Assembly Example). The transformation of the off-line programming in overlapping workareas as well as the redundancy of material and tool flow create an ideal environment for innovative strategies of assembly control systems, hand-in-hand assembly, disorder management and so on. The assembly cell is composed of 5 robots of different producers; these 5 robots are integrated in the assembly process by the cell control system. An innovative jointing technology is assigned to each robot. Standardized interfaces make an exchange of most tools between the robots possible.
