Abstract
All industrial nations are exposed to increasingly severe national and international competition. Markets have become larger through alignments within the EC but they have also become easier to enter into with the result that a large number of international competitors are forcing their way into an area which is already close to saturation. This produces surplus capacities with considerable pressure on prices due to the excess supply, forcing manufacturers to reduce costs through a variety of measures or to increase the utility of their products. As increasing attention is being paid to specific customer requirements there has been a massive increase in the variety of products and parts with smaller batch sizes, tighter delivery schedules and extreme demands in terms of product quality and costumer service. Developments in the world market indicate that zero-error quality, high supply availability even with fluctuating order quantities and a number of customer-specific variants are the only way of justifying the high production costs in Germany and of enabling high product prices to be passed on.
