The dynamic behaviour of 1050 Al was investigated by means of planar impact experiments. The experiments yield basic research data on the dynamic behaviour of 1050 Al in dependence of the projectile velocity. Previously the facility had to be adapted to planar impact technology. The efficiency of the facility in recording plastic wavefronts with high rise times could be tested as well. During the impact pressures of 0.3 - 8.0 GPa were generated in the plates. The velocity-time profiles of the rearside of the targets were recorded by a velocity interferometer VISAR. The Hugoniot elastic limit (HEL) of 1050 Al was determined. In all experiments stress relaxation was observed after the elastic precursor. The values of the shock and particle velocities u sub S and u sub P, respectively, yield the Hugoniot relation. The stress-strain relation was found. The parabolic shape of the curve indicates strain hardening of the material. By the improved time resolution of the measurement system corr ect strain rates up to 2x10 high 6 s high -1 were obtained. From rise time of the plastic waves the pressure-strainrate relation was derived.
