Functional surfaces designed to withstand the imposed stress and strain are produced by means of laser surface treatment using additive materials. This technique allows to produce a wide range of different layers through alloying, cladding and dispersing. Numerous applications from different sectors as automotive industry, nuclear industry and plastic processing industry are presented. The materials related to are different steels, cast iron and as additives metallic alloys, carbon and carbides. In addition to the operational properties the economical aspects of laser surface treatment are discussed.
