A single stage igniter based upon the arcless or electrochemical initiation of a liquid propellant of relatively high electrical conductivity has been developed in a cooperative effort by the institutions DNAG, EMI and BRL. The small scale electrical igniter, capable of firing a caliber 30-mm regenerative liquid propellant gun, emerged from a series of experimental and theoretical investigations that included studies of the importance of electrode surface conditions by electron microscopy.
