Abstract
A special laser based testing technique has been developed in order to study damage mechanisms. Thermal shock and thermal cycling experiments on silicon nitride were performed, whereby the maximum temperatures were low enough that the material remained in the elastic region. Life-time predictions have been derived from the experimental results by means of a theoretical model. First investigations were also done on fracture processes caused by high temperature creep.
