Laser-assisted machining operations, based on the use of laser beam energy enhancing the cutting properties via local plastification of the material during the machining operation, can be used successfully to cut materials which are difficult to machine. The following contribution will show the technological potential highlighted by the results obtained in research carried out on laser-assisted turning of advanced ceramics, laser-assisted milling of high-performance steel (35 NCD 16) and Cobase alloys (Stellite 6). These studies indicate that laser-assisted hot machining of materials which are normally regarded as being "difficult to machine" decreases cutting forces and tool wear, thus increasing material removal rates.
