Abstract
Improvements in light weight structures, require new design concepts. The adhesive technology is decisive in this development. Important requirements for the establishment of the adhesive bonding technology in the quantity production of car bodies can be met. Possibilities in bonding oiled steel sheets with special adhesive formulations are presented. The bonding strength related to the oil content of the adhesive is discussed. Double-hat shaped profiles were bonded, spot-welded or bonded in combination with spot-welding and then assessed in crash tests. The highest energy absorption and the most advantageous deformation behaviour showed the profiles manufactured with the combination of adhesive bonding and spot-welding. The structural bonding of stainless steel sheets in applications with high environmental loads was investigated.
