The thermal and storage stabilities of 1:1 mixts. of 3-nitro-1,2,4-triazol-5-one (NTO) with either hexahydro-1,3,5- trinitro-1,3,5-triazine (RDX) or trinitrotoluene (TNT) and of the single components were tested. Storage expts. over 8 and 16 wk were conducted at Thermogravimetry/DTA indicated chem. decompn. at Differential scanning calorimetry showed even higher decompn. temps. Microcalorimetric measurements at showed no significant reactivities in the mixts. Adiabatic self-heating started at and the transition to deflagration occurred between (RDX) and (NTO, TNT). Controlled decompn. of RDX occurred in the NTO/RDX mixts., and self-heating of the mixt. started at lower temp. than in the case of pure components. The decompn. of the NTO/TNT mixt. is NTO-controlled, and a relative increase in the reactivity between the components was obsd. at > IR absorption, mass loss, and H2O content did not in dicate any incompatibility between the components. However, NTO/TNT mixts. were discolored and caked after 16 wk at
