Influencing factors on the carbothermal reduction of titanium dioxide without and with simultaneous nitridation
Abstract
As a result of the investigation of the formation of hard materials with NaCl type structure in the TiC- TiN-TiO system, the reaction sequences during the carbothermal reduction of titanium dioxide without and with simultaneous nitridation can be shown to be equal. By thermodynamic calculations it was found that the composition of the instant of formation in nitrogen-free atmosphere lies in the range between TiC0.6O0.4 and TiC0.7O0.3, whereas the presence of nitrogen even at low partial pressures leads to the formation of titanium carboxynitride TiCsubxOsubyNsubz with a considerable content of nitrogen. Experimental results confirm the results of the thermochemical calculations. In addition, some of the factors influencing the reaction, such as the modification, the grain size of titanium dioxide and the structure of the carbon type used in the reaction, were investigated. The grain growth during the reaction and the lattice parameter of the cubic phase as a function of composition are discussed.
