Abstract
Robotics are continuously cinsidered for new applications in the manufacturing industry as well as in areas outside of manufacturing. Traditional applications like in automotive and electrical industry, stand for 385 000 installations as a world total, according to IRF statistics for 1989. Over the last ten years the average annual growth rate has been almost 35%. These figures are impressive, however, these installations are with few exceptions in general low-valued repetititve tasks like spot-welding, spray painting, machine loading/unloading and so on. For more complicated applications, e.g. flexible assembly, industrial robot still fall short, requiring redesign of products and expensive equipment.
