Abstract
During the last 30 years, the robot market boomed in a way forecasted by only a few experts. At the beginning most of the robots were applied for spot welding, arc welding and coating within the automotive industries, performing a variety of tasks within application areas like assembly, machining or casting. Industrial robots still have a large growth potential within their classical application areas as well as within "new" application areas and industries. Robots operating outside the production sector (so-called service robots) are at the beginning of a promising career. To introduce service robots successfully in the market some pre-conditions must be met such as developments in the field of sensor, driving and control technology as well as acceptance for this kind of technology in our society.
