Abstract
Gas generators are functional units from chemical and mechanical components whose purpose is to ensure a rapid production of gases. Their major fields of use in airbag-systems, fire-exthinguishing systems, and in special applications in the field of safety technology. Known applications are explained in detail, whereby the special requirements profile of gas generators depending on their intended use is described in greater detail. Research potentials and -trends are presented both from new applications as well as from new materials systems and technologies. The system properties of gas generators are - when using solid gas generator materials - determined in the first place by their chemical composition, the geometry of their shape and the technical design of the generators. In this context, a careful alignment of the system parameters must be undertaken in each case of use, with safety in handling and function in addition to waste disposal as background factors. Gas generators for ai rbag applications will continue to gain in importance as integral components in automobile safety, which will find its expression in a turbulent market growth.
