WIT (ESPRIT 25677) aims to find out about the influence of Internet-enabled information exchange in a traditional production and marketing value chain, namely in the business domain of wood/furniture. This is done by a user-driven attempt to establish a network of special Web-servers that deliver graphical, technical and trading information to a client side. The client user - which may be an architect, vendor, or end-customer - accesses all data through common methods and user interfaces. A unique feature of the WIT-approach is the possibility to reconstruct the customers target site as a realistic three-dimensional scene and insert and view furniture designs he has just downloaded from a WIT Web-server. First results in business requirements, 3D graphics, and WITs client/server architecture will be explained in this paper.
