This is a review about latest progress in sintered alumina. New shaping approaches applied for high purity raw materials give microstructures with grain sizes that may be significantly smaller than one micrometer. Technological and microstructural conditions are described that result in pressureless sintered single phase alumina hard and strong like hot-isostatical pressed TiC strengthened composites with a high carbide content of 30-40 %. Whereas a submicrometer grain size is essential for an extremely high hardness and, under certain conditions, a strongly reduced wear rate, platelet shaped grain and submicrometer grain sizes are, surprisingly, not a straightforward means to a high toughness and strength. The highest strength of 800 - 900 MPa was achieved with gel casting and grain sizes of about 1.5 micrometer. In some examples, this high average strength was associated with a standard deviation of less than 5 % (representing a Weibull modulus of 40-50).
