Fast image communication and presentation in a distributed LAN environment

A new method for fast image communication and image presentation in a distributed environment is described in this paper. The basic idea is to use an image conversion server, a common image archive and a unified image interchange format for all applications linked together by a local area network (LAN). Moreover, image presentation can be accelerated by pre-calculating a few relevant image derivatives for each image to be stored in the image archive, whereby each derivative represents one class of image formats.
