The carcinogenic potency of the PAH-containing emissions cannot be evaluated simply by their PAH concentrations. The carcinogenic effects of the PAH very much depends on the binding strength of the PAH containing particle in the lung. A long residence time provides an extended period for the elution of adsorbed PAH. A short residence time combined with a low dissolution rate of the PAH from the particle will lead to a comparably low carcinogenic effect.
