In modern departments of quality control, application of X-rays is one of the most important methods of fault detection in castings. An improvement of present technology will be presented, which makes X-ray techniques suitable for advanced inspection tasks on the production floor. Complex castings produce high dynamical greyvalue images; furthermore only 2D-information of the inspected 3D-object is obtained. A recently developed algorithm for pattern recognition allows the fast automatic, or interactive detection and localisation of different, faint flaws even in images with complicated background structure. Image data for calculation of exact depth information (3D-localisation) is provided by simultaneous use of Stereo Vision. A method of beam optimization by simple filter techniques is installed; this way ideal X-ray energies can be selected which consequently leads to improved greyvalue contrasts. Considerably better defect detections were achieved by applications of these methods o n special gear castings.
