PC-based synthetic aperture focusing technique (SAFT) has been used to analyse ultrasonic indications detected in inservice inspections of nuclear power plant components. In the field applications scanning can be performed also manually using a simple manipulator giving the necessary probe displacement information needed for data reconstruction and imaging of defects. Due to the very compact equipement used in the measurements the technique can be used also in areas where access is limited and large scanners or automatic inspection systems can't be applied. One of the key factors in all the applications of the technique is the selection of proper transducer for measurement. With conventional transducers only indication in componenets having relatively large wall thickness can be evaluated. To enlarge the scope of application to smaller wall theickness special composite transducers have been used. With these transducers the typical wall thickness of nuclear power plant piping can be cov ered. The results from several practical applications including both evaluation of indications in primary components and piping welds in nuclear power plants will be presented.
