The strength and the time to fracture under a given load for ceramic materials is determined by the flaws in the structure such as pores, inclusions or cracks. For the application of ceramics in motors or gas-turbines it is necessary to detect and characterize these flaws in a component nondestructively. Based on the nondestructive evaluation and a fracture surface analysis fracture mechanics methods are used to asses the severety of these flaws using failure models. The investigation were carried out with sintered silicon nitride (SSN) supplied by DFVLR.
