Ceramic coatings on aluminium by one-step laser cladding
Abstract
Currently the method of plasma spraying is widely used to produce ceramic coatings of about 1 mm thickness. However, the assprayed coatings are usually porous and are not chemically bonded to the substrate material, which limits their range of application. Recently the laser cladding technology has been applied successfully to produce metallic and hard metal coatings. In the present work, the suitability of this one-step technology for the generation of ceramic coatings on metal is being tested. Especially the dense, non-porous Al2O3/TiO2-layers mostly have good bonding properties and only a few vertical cracks. Their adhesive strength is higher than that of plasma sprayed coatings of comparable composition. The grindability has been tested successfully too. By variation of technical components and technological parameters the structural, geometrical and mechanical properties of these coatings can be improved.
