Dynamic strength and ductility of a tungsten-alloy for KE-penetrators in swaged and unswaged condition under various loading

A 91%-heavy alloy, as used for kinetic energy penetrators, was investigated in two conditions: as-sintered and 13% rolled and annealed. Dynamic tension tests are showing for each alloy its own characteristic increase in strength (sometimes twice the quasistatic value) and decrease in ductility with increasing strain rate. Stress-strain relationship under compression loading is different from that under tension loading: like other tungsten alloys the compression strength is much higher than the tension one. Under unnotched bending the forces for bending rise also with increasing strain-rate, but the amount is only half of that known from tension tests. (IFAM)
