Pressure hydrolysis of propellants
Abstract
The pressure hydrolysis of five relevant NVA- propellants under alkaline conditions is presented. The reactions were studied under following conditions: ratio of propellant to water was 10 : 1, ratio of propellant to NaOH was 2,3 : 1. The reaction temperature was 150 degree and 160 degree, resp. The reaction products (liquid and gaseous hydrolysates and solid residues) were characterised. The resulting hydrolysis products have a high potential in biological decomposition. Main products of the alkaline hydrolysis were short chain mono- and dicarbonic acids. Under reaction conditions 30-50 percent of the nitrogen bounded in the propellants was found in the hydrolysates as nitrite and nitrate. The nitrogen content of the gaseous products (Nsub2 16-46 percent Nsub2O 2-23 percent, NOsubx 4-5 percent is about 40-60 percent 2-9 percentof nitrogen were found in the residues.
