This paper presents concepts for the integration of laser processing and milling in a hybrid machining platform. Based on the analysis of requirements for an individualized production technology in high-wage countries a modular concept for the efficient machining of small batch sizes is developed. The hybrid system is built by the integration of a jointed-arm robot and specialized laser sources. The requirements for the modules and the mechanical and electronic interfaces are described. The multi-technology platform is used to gain empirical knowledge about mechanical and thermal interactions of the hybrid process chains and single system components. Thereby, adequate compensation strategies for machine, robot and laser control are derived. Finally a requirement specification for hybrid manufacturing systems that allows the cost effective configuration of the modules for specific workpiece ranges is defined. By flexible combination possibilities, a high average utilization of the modules machine, robot and laser is achieved. Thereby, the profitability of the production system is increased significantly.
