Sleepiness and microsleep in busdrivers

A field study on influencing factors
Abstract
Sleepiness is one main cause for severe traffic accidents. This is especially the case for bus drivers, due to their work conditions which can enhance the creation of sleepiness. In this paper, a study is presented which aims to identify the main influencing factors and possible interactions for sleepiness at the steering wheel. Therefore, potential influencing factors were identified from the literature and are currently investigated in an empiric field study on long distance night drives with passengers. Sleepiness is measured as a dependant variable by means of the Pupillographic Sleepiness Test, eye lid behaviour, video analysis and subjective rating scales.
