Millimetre-wave technology is opening up many new types of safety and security applications such as military reconnaissance, detection of concealed weapons or plastic explosives, and landing aids or runway controls in avionics. At Fraunhofer-Institut für Angewandte Festkörperphysik (Fraunhofer IAF) the world's first 220 GHz millimetre-wave monolithic integrated circuits (MMICs) and modules have been developed for the fabrication of high-resolution sensors and imaging systems.
