This paper presents the modification of chipping tools in woodworking applications by a sensor layer. A piezo resistive hydrogenated carbon film is deposited onto the flange contact surface of a hollow - shank taper. The resulting system is able to detect unbalances while the tool accelerates. Real-time monitoring enables the identification of irregular operating states,which could negatively affect quality and safety of operation.
