It is increasingly important for a production system to maintain the availability of machines as single elements. This paper presents an availability centered approach to optimize the single elements (machines) in a production system with the Combined Design and Availability FMEA (CDA-FMEA). Based on the CDA-FMEA, it is possible to derive an availability model that estimates the effects of unavailability of an analyzed system on successive production centers and on the production systems.
