Abstract
The use of adhesive bonding technology for aircraft structural components is still restricted, mainly due to a lack of universal, economic and robust processing techniques and appropriate non-destructive quality inspection tools, so that technical progress in this area is crucial for further capture of the functional and economic benefits of adhesively bonded structures. This paper presents the objectives, approach and interim results of the European FP6 STREP project ABiTAS, which addresses at a fundamental advancement on structural adhesive bonding with paste adhesives for aerospace applications. Central target of ABiTAS is the development of a more robust, flexible and economic process chain for structural assembly by adhesive bonding in order to boost the feasibility of new structural concepts as they are envisaged by a number of currently running European and national research and demonstrator projects. So ABiTAS targets directly at the reduction of costs for aircraft development, production and aircraft operation and contributes to meet the demands stated in the ACARE SRA and the Vision 2020 Report. ABiTAS provides advanced automated processing, new in-process surface quality control techniques and innovative paste adhesives with an extended tolerance window regarding processibility and bond-line geometry as well as long-term stability of joint properties. Therefore within ABiTAS four major innovations are developed and integrated into one process chain: 1. Surface pre-treatments of polymer composites and titanium alloys, which assure durable bonding and which are applicable for automated processing. 2. Inline-Monitoring of the physico-chemical state of treated polymer composite surfaces as an effective quality control tool, which can be integrated into the assembly line. 3. Paste adhesive chemistry, which enables more flexibility with processing and assembly via bonding on command and introduction of new material functionalities. 4. Advanced fit analysis, automated bond-line gap adapted application of paste adhesives and advanced assembly technology, which reduces assembly pressure and shortens cycle times. Adhesively bonded joints, which shall both carry high dynamic loads for a long time and resist against chemical and physical exposures, require clean substrate surfaces providing sufficient adhesion properties by formation of stable chemical bonds.
