The fast development of data processing has directly affected the manufacturing sector. With the use of CNC technology it was possible to develop new sheet metal forming processes. This paper describes the current state-of-art and new developments in the field of incremental sheet forming (ISF). This innovative forming technology shows new opportunities in prototyping and low volume production, without the need of expensive tools.
By means of a serial produced engine bonnet were different influences on product quality tested. Design elements like beads or logos were formed into the surface of the bonnet part during the tests. Especially the influence on surface quality, thinning and formability is discussed in detail. These investigations lead to the result that the quality is mainly related to the forming time. The concluding part of this paper considers possibilities of optimisation and an economical review shows fields of application.
