The huge available bandwidth at 60 GHz together with recent advances in mm wave RF component design have attracted high interest for short range communication at 60 GHz. This paper give some insight in the physical layer for a 60 GHz demonstrator, which is in development at the IHP. Using an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) based single- input single-output (SISO) link, data rates of up to 1 GBit/s are targeted. The paper deals mainly with the performance of convolutional codes in the 60 GHz radio channel. The authors' proposed system is compared to a similar system using twice the bandwidth for improved frequency selectivity.
