Abstract
The performance of a NALM (nonlinear amplifying loop mirror) as a 2R regenerator for an 80-Gb/s RZ-DQPSK ( return-to zero differential quadrature phase-shift keying) has been investigated. A significant eye-opening improvement and a negative power penalty of 2.6 dB have been obtained. The phase-preserving amplitude-regeneration capability of a NALM has been demonstrated by eye-diagram and bit error ratio measurements for a strongly amplitude-distorted 80-Gb/s RZ-DQPSK signal.
