Titel
Influence of the chill casting process on the cyclic material behavior of nodular cast iron
Abstract
A chill casting process provides high cooling rates and thus short solidification times of the melt. The resulting finer microstructure compared with microstructures in sand castings offers potential for an increased fatigue strength and thus the implementation of lightweight design strategies. Since specific fatigue data for chilled nodular cast iron are not available in present design methodologies, material investigations on chill cast EN-GJS-600-3 and EN-GJS-400-18-LT have been carried out. The determined fatigue strength of specimens removed from chill cast hollow rotor shafts for wind turbines, compared with those of conventional sand castings, is significantly higher. Additionally, metallographic investigations confirmed the fine microstructure.
