Systems Science and Social Science Foundations of Computer-Assisted Policy Analysis
Abstract
Originally developed in the technical sciences, computer simulation has over the past decade been increasingly used for the simulation of processes in societal systems and as a tool of policy analysis. New scientific and socio-political problems arise in this connection, to which solutions are for the greater part still in their infancy. The article provides a survey of the specific requirements of simulations of societal systems, in particular with respect to their use in computer-assisted policy analysis, of foundations available in the social and the systems sciences, of research gaps, of the problems of application, and of the relevant literature.
