Evaluation model for multi-energy carrier facilities within the control energy market
Abstract
There are chances for companies to participate in the German energy markets and generate additional income by powering up or shutting down their facilities and supporting the stabilization efforts from the grid operator. However, the income is highly based on the flexibility markets, the velocity of the flexibility, the amount of energy flexibility and the right timing. The load profile plays a particular role here. Companies are currently not in a position to assess the cost saving potential of hybrid or bivalent systems, when participating in the control energy market. The Institute of Energy Efficiency in Production EEP of the University of Stuttgart and the Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Engineering and Automation IPA have jointly developed an evaluation model, that enables companies to determine the level of potential earnings based on historical values quickly. The developed model was verified based on a modeled bivalent crucible furnace - able to switch from electricity to gas - by assessing the energy reduction potential, the level of energy flexibility, the CO2 reduction potential and the frequency of demand.
